product description
Alexandra Lehmler - Soprano, Alto & Baritone saxophone, bass clarinet, clarinet, flute, voice
Matthias Debus - Double bass, voice
One swallow does not make a summer, but two excellent instrumentalists can certainly make a superb album: Mannheim saxophonist Alexandra Lehmler, after various trio, quartet, and larger ensembles, has recorded a pandemic-compliant duo album with her partner, bassist Matthias Debus, featuring a noticeable amount of avian presence - perhaps because even birds usually come in pairs, or perhaps because flying has been denied to most of us lately.
Highly sensitive, volatile, intensely intimate duets. At times, initially "only" condensed sound studies, from which suddenly very catchy melodies develop out of complex structures.
Alexandra Lehmler plays on sax-related reed instruments probably everything that doesn't turn into a reed at the count of three: virtuosic with a round, warm tone. Matthias Debus has been her reliable sideman in previous formations, and here he stands as a duo partner with the double bass on an equal footing, very eloquent and with extremely accurate intonation.
"Tandem" is Alexandra Lehmler's third release for Neuklang. Together, it becomes at least one bird that flies.
