Alexandra Lehmler

Alexandra Lehmler, born in 1979 in Bad Ems on the Lahn, trained in Mannheim, Stuttgart, and Paris, recipient of the Jazz Prize Baden-Württemberg 2014, and a fellow of the Kunststiftung Baden-Württemberg, is one of the exemplary musicians in the German jazz scene. She is a brilliant advocate with a penchant for the extraordinary, seeking a very personal balance between passion and expressive will on one hand, and the sensuality of groove and melody on the other. For a long time, she has been looking beyond the borders to France, where the jazz scene is much more influenced by traditional music forms from the regions, as well as by migration from former colonies and globalization.
Here, the saxophonist, who effortlessly uses the caravan sound of the soprano saxophone, the flexible bite of the alto saxophone, or the rich roar of the baritone saxophone, finds many musicians who share her openly engaging approach. This benefits her playing: she naturally and confidently incorporates motifs from world music and moves with equal conviction in minimalist or electrified soundscapes that can sometimes become dark and rocky, dirty and coarse. It's not a question of styles or the style; it's a question of style, and she has plenty of it.
