product description

Olivia Trummer - piano, vocals; Jean-Lou Treboux - vibraphone

With her new project "Classical to Jazz," or C2J, Olivia Trummer proves that opposites not only attract but can also complement each other excellently. The pianist and composer is not the first to take on the challenge of combining two seemingly contradictory genres like classical and jazz. Musicians from both camps actively ask themselves how to merge the broad arcs of tension, refined touch, and nuanced expression from classical music with the spontaneity, freedom, and rhythmic energy of jazz.

On CLASSICAL TO JAZZ ONE, Olivia Trummer explores works by great masters such as Johann Sebastian Bach, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and Domenico Scarlatti, creating new compositions from them. The Swiss vibraphone virtuoso Jean-Lou Treboux joins her as a congenial partner in this project: Trummer intuitively dissects the classical works and carefully ponders the musical templates for the duo. Treboux then responds spontaneously to the resulting outcome, instinctively incorporating his own ideas. In their unique way, Olivia Trummer and Jean-Lou Treboux loosen the corset of classical music and celebrate musical elegance and finesse with compelling lightness and a touch of humor - because it's clear that the two are having a lot of fun, which you can clearly hear!

With C2J, Olivia Trummer embarks on her passion project, uniting both worlds.

Press:

"A new, personal music (...) stylistically - in the best sense of the word - hovering between the legendary duo recordings of Gary Burton and Chick Corea from the 1970s and the classics. The classical themes remain recognizable but are transformed so extensively that they have completely lost their classical character (...)."

Rondo 10/15 (Werner Stiefele)

"Always elegant, sensitive, and with a playing culture that combines the best of both relatives, Olivia Trummer and Jean-Lou Treboux adapt the classics unmistakably from a jazz perspective, bringing them to life with an enchanting liveliness that transcends eras and genres."

Jazz Podium 09/15 (Tobias Böcker)

"In their congenial interplay, the two musicians translate the classical themes into their own jazz context. This is exciting and catchy at the same time, sophisticated yet not unwieldy."

Jazz thing 09/15 (Michael Stürm)

"A fine crossover album."

HIFI-Stars 09/15 (Frank Lechtenberg)

"So, the pianist and the vibraphonist use the material as a basis for elegant, sensitive, and sometimes self-ironic excursions into a world dominated by the modern music of the 21st century."

Jazzthetik 09/15 (Reinhard Köchl)
