Kicks & Sticks, Directed by Wolfgang Diefenbach

Latin Jazz Pure!

With "Corazón Latino Especial," the highly talented young musicians of the Hessian State Youth Jazz Orchestra explore South America in their renowned virtuosic style, showcasing the wide range of Latin American jazz music from Brazil to Cuba to the Latino scene in New York. They deliver an exhilarating mixture of different Latin American rhythms. Whether sensitive samba ballads or lively Latin jazz, the young musicians play with remarkable skill!

Having shared the stage with numerous jazz greats, the high caliber of the "Kicks & Sticks" ensemble is reflected in its guest soloists: Bandleader Wolfgang Diefenbach has gathered some of the best musicians from the Latin jazz scene, making this excursion beyond swing even more exciting. And the outstanding soloists have brought their own music to the table. For this unique recording, guest soloists and composers such as Joe Gallardo, Jiggs Whigham, and Claudio Roditi were recruited. Master Herb Geller - heard on the wonderful ballad "Rio de Maio" - and vocalist Josee Koning complete the outstanding lineup of guest stars.

As the musical director and founder of the Hessian State Youth Jazz Orchestra (Kicks & Sticks), Wolfgang Diefenbach has been offering highly talented young musicians, as well as selected winners of the Hessian State Competition "Youth Jazz," the opportunity for professional big band training for over 20 years. Kicks & Sticks is one of the best youth jazz orchestras in Europe and consistently garners attention for its outstanding performances and passion for playing. For his exceptional work, which has earned the orchestra recognition far beyond state borders and internationally, Wolfgang Diefenbach was awarded the Hessian Cultural Prize this year.
