Florian Weiss - trombone; Linus Amstad - alto sax; Valentin v. Fischer - double bass; Philipp Leibundgut - drums, glockenspiel
For five years, this young Swiss quartet led by Florian Weiss has been captivating both the music press and a steadily growing fanbase. In the spring of 2014, the composer and trombonist founded the band Woodoism with Linus Amstad (alto sax), Philipp Leibundgut (drums, glockenspiel), and Valentin v. Fischer (double bass), all of whom were students at the Bern University of the Arts at the time. In June 2015, they were selected for the "DKSJ-Best of Swiss-Jazz-Bachelors" concert series, and in 2017, they released their highly acclaimed debut album "Woodoism" independently. In 2018, the quartet won the "ZKB Jazzpreis" (ZKB Jazz Prize) and the Audience Award. Additionally, they have toured Switzerland, Austria, Germany, Hungary, and Slovakia.
With "REFUGIUM," Florian Weiss' Woodoism now presents their second album, recorded at the legendary Bauer Studios in Ludwigsburg.
The band name carries a deliberate double association of Voodoo and Wood, reflecting both warmth and complexity in sound. The lineup, with only a two-piece rhythm section plus two brass players, is as unusual as it is appealing for a jazz quartet.
"As a trombonist, I appreciate the absence of a harmony instrument because it allows the instrument's tonal and lyrical possibilities to come to the fore. In larger bands, techniques like multiphonics, where you play one note and sing another into the horn simultaneously (heard in 'Schichtende,' 'Heavy Cats,' and 'Danse Amoureuse'), are difficult to use effectively as they can easily get lost in the overall sound," Weiss states. Regarding the album, he adds: "'REFUGIUM' is also the title of one of the pieces on the CD that are particularly close to my heart. It is dedicated to an imaginary place where one feels safe and secure. Where time, obligations, problems, stress, and everyday life play no role. The album is called 'Refugium' because this band is, in a way, my musical refuge. Here, I bring my compositions, here, we work together on our musical ideas and their implementation. Over the five years of band history, we have become really good friends, and it's nice to feel that, even though I (almost) take care of all the compositional and organizational tasks, everyone is pulling in the same direction and showing a strong commitment to the band."
