"More Than the Sum of Its Parts"

With "FORWARD," Torque delivers an impressive debut. The compactness of their cohesion and the passion with which they play their music becomes evident when considering that the entire album was recorded in just one day.

Pianist Koen Schalkwijk is responsible for most of the trio's compositions on the album. He has already graced several major stages, including the North Sea Jazz Festival and the Bimhuis in Amsterdam. Mathias Polligkeit on double bass and Antoine Duijkers on drums not only provide a solid foundation but also pave the way for the expressive compositions, in which they equally participate. Besides their intensive engagement with contemporary jazz trends, the influence of pop music and classical music on the trio's sound is unmistakable. The compositions are rich in expression and melody. The musicians move fluidly through the pieces, following the flow of the music wherever it may lead them. While the individuals are always reflected in the music, they consistently serve the musical whole.

Press:

"A piano trio full of variety, independence, and depth. Finally again!"

Jazzthetik 11/11 (Reinhard Köchl)

"(...) not the only ensemble to step into the gap to further develop the e.s.t. concept, but one of the most convincing. (...) Torque is working on their concept of playing modern jazz that is beautiful to listen to despite all its complexity."

SR2 10/11 (Thomas Kreutzer)

"With influences from pop and rock, Schalkwijk forges compositions into solid contemporary jazz, occasionally interspersed with light-footed, dreamy piano lines, making the pieces sound open."

Jazzenzo 09/11 (Erno Elsinga)

"Forward is a brilliant album carried by talented young people."

Citizen Jazz 09/11 (Franpi Barriaux)

"(...) so high-quality that concentrated listening is allowed - the three of them offer so much catchy balance that the CD quickly takes on an earworm character."

PianoNews 09/11 (Tom Fuchs)

"A young Dutch trio that recommends itself with rhythmic drive and great (pop) melodic gesture. (...) where many details unfold playfully without the music getting lost in the arbitrary."

stereoplay 08/10 (Matthias Inhoffen)

"The trio works exceptionally well together. They draw from rock and classical influences to present extremely modern jazz."

Jazzflits 08/11 (Peter J. Korten)

"(...) this is jazz through and through, but harmonious, atmospheric, and of great beauty. (...) these gentlemen understand each other perfectly and deliver an overwhelming business card with this CD, which lovers of contemporary jazz can safely acquire without taking any risks."

audiofreaks.nl 07/11

"But Schalkwijk's Torque trio (...) goes further in some respects than e.s.t. Torque also flirts with sounds and grooves from pop and funk, echoes Bach and Chopin, and collages everything into songs of enchanting beauty. But they spin the thread further into the musical now, weaving textures even faster and denser. And they stand out from many other e.s.t. epigones with originality and freshness."

kulturtipp 07/11

"With the mature debut CD 'Forward,' Torque makes an astonishing impression."

Mpodia 06/11

"It's easy to hear with the Torque trio that the individual band members are serving the group. Not that the individual abilities of the members are limited, on the contrary! Each of them combines the ability to improvise clear ideas with knowledge of jazz tradition and a healthy desire to make personal stylistic decisions. However, the fact that this trio has been working together for several years is the reason why the group is more than the sum of its parts. The musicians are able to anticipate each other and have developed a communal dynamic that is completely natural and fluid. This means that the trio's major challenge takes place at an advanced level; it's not just about keeping the ball rolling, but rather about how the members can constantly surprise and disrupt each other to give the music the desired dynamics, variety, and depth. This trio succeeds exceedingly well in this, and they are in great development."
