product description
Christoph Haas transforms the harmonic proportions of a church space into music on his new CD titled "Soundscapes." Drawing on the principles of ancient Greek and Roman architecture, Haas explores the relationship between space and music, echoing the Pythagorean belief that numbers are the gateway to understanding the world, with music representing the perfect expression of harmonic proportions.
The ideal space for this project was found in the Chiesa Rotonda di San Bernardino in Graubünden, a church designed in the style of Greek and Roman round temples, inspired by Palladio's circular buildings. The architectural design of the church is notable for its abundance of integer proportions, creating a large resonant space that amplifies and extends every sound. Haas composes meditative-experimental music at the intersection of Eastern and Western traditions, using minimalistic techniques to bridge medieval and contemporary styles.
Born in 1953, Christoph Haas is a versatile musician who has explored various musical traditions, from classical to rock, jazz, and world music. He has studied rhythm traditions in West Africa, Latin America, and South India, developing a mastery of percussion techniques and polyrhythms. Haas's music is characterized by virtuosity, pulsating rhythms, and rich overtones.
Stephanie Haas, his collaborator, has dedicated herself to performing works by composers persecuted during the fascist era, such as Gideon Klein, Viktor Ullmann, and Pavel Haas. She has also collaborated with contemporary composers like Violeta Dinescu and Sofia Gubaidulina, showcasing a diverse repertoire that spans different musical periods and styles.
