Marc Mangen Trio: Marc Mangen - piano; Johannes Schaedlich - double bass; Jens Biehl - drums
The Path to Music
With "STRAINS OF DELIGHT AND DESPAIR," Marc Mangen presents 9 tracks with his trio, which have emerged from a large collection of jazz themes over the years. These themes are often subjected to a developmental process, in which he rewrites parts or even entire themes after playing them with other musicians. This continues until the piece reaches something like a "definitive" version. In his opinion, the 9 titles presented here have reached this status and thus found their way onto the album.
Each theme has its own concept, into which the composer has quasi-embedded the interpretation. However, for Mangen, this does not mean that there is only one correct way to play. The concept is somewhat variable. The interpretations on the album are therefore snapshots, capturing a particular moment.
The most important aspect of a theme is the melody; it alone shows Marc Mangen the path to music.
As bonus material, this enhanced CD includes the lead sheets for all tracks in PDF format.
