product description
One swallow does not make a summer, but two excellent instrumentalists can certainly create an outstanding album: Mannheim saxophonist Alexandra Lehmler, alongside her partner, bassist Matthias Debus, has recorded a pandemic-compliant duo album following various trio, quartet, and larger ensembles. This album features a noticeable amount of avian imagery—perhaps because bird wings usually come in pairs, or perhaps because flying has been largely restricted for many of us recently.
The album consists of highly sensitive, volatile, and intensively intimate duets. Some pieces start as dense sound studies, from which highly catchy melodies suddenly emerge from complex structures. Alexandra Lehmler demonstrates virtuosity on saxophone-related woodwind instruments, showcasing a rounded, warm tone. Matthias Debus, a reliable sideman in previous formations, emerges as an equal partner in this duo, displaying eloquence and remarkably accurate intonation on the double bass.
"Tandem" marks Alexandra Lehmler's third release for Neuklang, and as a duo, it becomes at least one bird that soars.
