Expressive Precision

The "Trio d’Anches" (Reed Trio) forms a particularly demanding category within chamber music for wind instruments. Like the string trio, the three-part writing presents players with significant tonal challenges. The individual exposure of each player contrasts intriguingly with the need for integration into the ensemble sound. Additionally, the vastly different characteristics of the three reed instruments - oboe, clarinet, and bassoon - must be reconciled within this transparent instrumentation. The Arlequin Trio has embraced this challenge with exceptional care and has developed an extensive repertoire for this ensemble over the years.

With refined approach, admirable breath control, and brilliant finger technique - simultaneously expressive, in finely coordinated harmony, and with great dedication - the three musicians interpret six works that are favorites of this ensemble. The "Divertimento" by the Scottish composer Geraldine Mucha, who lives in Prague, was written for the Arlequin Trio and appears here for the first time on CD.

Since 1986, Roland Perrenoud (Oboe), Michael Reid (Clarinet), and David Schneebeli (Bassoon) have collectively cultivated the art of trio playing under the name Arlequin Trio. All three are soloists in major Swiss orchestras: Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, Geneva; Tonhalle – Orchester Zürich; and Basel Symphony Orchestra. Their orchestral work is complemented by activities as teachers, soloists, and, of course, chamber musicians. The Arlequin Trio has performed with great success throughout Switzerland and in France, the Netherlands, and England, often in conjunction with chamber music workshops. Each year, the Arlequin Trio hosts the International Chamber Music Course for Wind Instruments at the Hindemith Music Center in Blonay (Switzerland), which attracts students from around the world.

Press:

"The three performers managed to delight the audience with flawless and lively performances. Indeed, they are 'sorcerers' of technical skills, as well as tonal and dynamic shading."
Engadiner Post

"The musicians, thanks to their extraordinary precision combined with audacity, which also allows for lyrically floating moments, demonstrate their command of a security that enables them to master the most difficult passages."
L’Express Neuchâtel"
