product description
Katharina Maschmeyer – tenor & soprano saxophone; Nils Pollheide – guitar; Philipp Rüttgers – Rhodes / synth bass; Jens Otto – drum
CK ON ICE, FLYING COW is already the third studio album of the Katharina Maschmeyer Quartet and, unlike its predecessors, it features more funk and rock influences. The band has musically and sonically evolved significantly, not least due to numerous concerts with Echo Jazz winner and WDR Jazz Prize winner Frederik Köster. It is evident that the band forms a well-coordinated unit. In addition to elaborately crafted modern jazz arrangements, the band distinguishes itself through the freedom it allows for interaction among the musicians. As a result, the compositions, almost exclusively composed by Katharina Maschmeyer and Nils Pollheide, feel intuitive and fluid, without being overly cerebral. Fast unison passages, intricate odd rhythms, and sophisticated bass lines alternate with free sections. Ballads and quieter passages are also present on the new album, ensuring plenty of variety within the agile quartet sound with high recognition value.
The band invested a lot of time in production and worked extensively with sound effects. The band recommends using headphones to discover the nuances, but of course, the album is also enjoyable through speakers.
