Intercontinental High Pressure
With BUENOS AIRES, Heiri Känzig weaves sonic threads between Europe and Argentina. Rising star on the bandoneon, Michael Zisman, flugelhornist Matthieu Michel, and the young highly talented pianist Urs Bollhalder meander around the song-like melodies of his compositions. The instruments weave their musical lines inspiringly into each other. Thus, a musical network is created, characterized by wistfully powerful melodic arcs that make one forget the complexity of the rhythms as in "quand on aime on ne compte pas" or "beyond time". The harmonic structure of the compositions moves away from common jazz norms and often leans towards an impressionistic sound ideal. The earthy warm tones of the expressive bassist and the groovy rhythmic play of drummer Lionel Friedli always keep the music simmering. This creates an interactive, energetic interplay that infuses European jazz with Argentine fresh air.
