With the Johanna Lucia Trio and the Myrsini Bekakou Quartet, the Freundeskreis Klangkultur is presenting two more outstanding award-winning ensembles from its first round of funding. Both groups impressed the jury with their distinctive artistic style, their high musical quality, and their innovative approach to contemporary jazz.
The Johanna Lucia Trio moves between modern jazz, classical music, and free improvisation. Pianist Johanna Lucia Pohlmann’s compositions arise from observations of everyday life, social issues, and influences from literature, film, and the visual arts. Together with Natasha Zaychenko on double bass and Ria Rother on drums, she develops a multi-layered, narrative soundscape characterized by rhythmic sophistication, sensitive interaction, and great stylistic openness.
The Myrsini Bekakou Quartet represents an extraordinary fusion of traditional Mediterranean music, contemporary jazz, and free improvisation. Greek violinist and composer Myrsini Bekakou, together with her ensemble, creates a distinctive sound characterized by melodic depth, rhythmic diversity, and a unique instrumental lineup. The violin takes on the role of the leading melodic instrument, lending the music a lyrical yet expressive timbre rarely heard in modern jazz.
The quartet’s music draws on the cultural traditions of Greece, translating their rhythms and musical languages into a contemporary jazz aesthetic. Following a sold-out performance at the Leipzig Jazz Festival, the ensemble quickly gained attention and is now considered one of the most exciting young groups on the European jazz scene.
This double concert offers a fascinating glimpse into the diversity of a new generation of female jazz musicians. Both ensembles combine compositional substance with improvisational freedom and present personal musical languages that extend far beyond stylistic boundaries. An evening full of discoveries, musical stories, and creative perspectives.
