Maria João

Classifying Maria João's music into a specific category is a challenging task because the Portuguese artist embraces various musical genres, including avant-garde, modern jazz, Latin American music, and Portuguese folklore. In 1991, she recorded the album "Sol" with her former project Maria João & Grupo Cal Viva at the Bauer Studios in Ludwigsburg. Nearly twenty-five years later, in April 2016, she returned to Ludwigsburg with her project "Ogre."
Teaming up with João Farinha on Fender Rhodes, Steinway grand piano, and synthesizers, as well as André Nascimento on laptop and sequencer, Maria João impresses, especially with her powerful and extensive vocal range.
The vinyl includes tracks from the current album "Plastic" and brilliant adaptations of works by William Shakespeare. During the Studio Konzert, Maria João presented remarkable musical interpretations of "Othello," "Romeo and Juliet," and various sonnets by the British poet.
The result is an extraordinary and experimental vinyl record where Maria João - Ogre achieves an impressive fusion of contemporary music and classical literature.
