product description

Lorenzo Colocci on flute and electronics, Marcus Franzke on trombone, Apollonio Maiello on piano, Markus Wach on double bass, and Mathis Grossmann on drums and electronics present their self-titled debut album "THE ROPESH," featuring exclusively original compositions. The quintet's multifaceted sound is shaped by the diverse musical backgrounds of its members, drawing influence from jazz, funk, classical, pop, hip-hop, metal, industrial, progressive, and electronic music. With their unique instrumentation and experimental spirit, they approach modern jazz from an unconventional angle, infusing it creatively with electronic sounds that blend seamlessly with beautiful melodies and distinctively groovy rhythms. The result is an engaging jazz experience that seamlessly merges inspiration and construction, combining colorful ensemble playing with individual expressiveness.

Special guests on the album include renowned jazz pianist Rainer Böhm and Bujazzo vocalist Miriam Ast. Formed in 2011 through various projects in Frankfurt and Mannheim, The Ropesh has continuously evolved its collective sound.

Press Reviews:

"The young quintet's remarkable versatility ranges from intense and ecstatic to lyrical and poetic." - Jazz Podium 11/13 (Gudrun Endress)

"First funk rules, soon followed by free improvisations, then a guitarist joins the fray, the flutist conjures up electronic speech fragments, and suddenly the listener finds themselves transported to South America as vocalist Miriam Ast creates Bossa nova flair." - Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung 10/13 (Tom Bullmann)

"Flutist Lorenzo Colocci, also the band's main composer, presents most of the exciting and complex pieces that intellectually challenge the listener. Colocci incorporates electronic bubbling, pop loops, or street talk into his compositions, alternating with explosive, melodically punctuated beats full of spontaneous energy." - Ludwigsburger Kreiszeitung 09/13 (Dietholf Zerweck)

"Something different, to be sure. A quintet of flute, trombone, bass, drums, and piano (plus electronics and a guest vocal). Forward-thinking, but there’s an indication that the quintet is keeping an eye on more traditional forms of Jazz in their rear view mirror, too. Grooves that melt into the stream of the song without becoming oppressive, and melodies that can be traced, but flutter at times just out of reach. Neat stuff." - emusic.com 08/13 (Dave Sumner)

"Listeners can expect diverse songs full of charm that herald a promising future. Listen to The Ropesh, take to the streets, or write to your representatives to bring them to your city... but do something instead of passively reading this!" - Jazz Magazine 07/13 (Thierry Quénum)

"No, predictability is not present in The Ropesh. Sometimes mystical and poetic, sometimes exciting and ecstatic, but always full of unexpected ideas, this gem, also distinguished by its Bauer House origin, is sonically excellent. Bravo!" - fairaudio.de 06/13 (Victoriah Szirmai)
