Just Relax
Can a standard album be modern? Yes, by serving contemporary listening habits with its timeless song material. That's precisely the goal trombonist Stephan Zimmermann has set for himself on his new album "My Kind Of People."
Nowhere do craftsmanship and inspiration, or personal style, form such a fruitful connection as in playing standards. There's a comforting transparency with finely balanced instrumental depth. Comparability enhances the uniqueness. Disciplining oneself as a musician in this endeavor to bring out the special qualities of the song material, while recognizing, respecting, and preserving the boundaries, has become the true art.
Stephan Zimmermann celebrates it with his quintet at a high level. On "My Kind Of People," the old musical grammar of standards is made available, without fuss, for contemporary experiences and narratives. The hustle and bustle of our time are countered here by the fundamental relaxation inherent in these wonderful melodies.
Thus, something rare has been achieved here: an album that is audibly jazz for all to hear. The genre serves as a declaration and aids in orientation and classification, but it imposes no barriers. In doing so, Stephan Zimmermann restores to standards what makes them essential at their core: their unifying power.
Stephan Zimmermann is a professor of jazz trumpet and ensemble at the State University of Music and Performing Arts Mannheim. He is a member of the Vienna Art Orchestra, with which he embarks on a major world tour in 2007. In addition, he performs concerts with Randy Brecker, Bobby Burgess, Klaus Doldinger, Scott Hamilton, Tony Lakatos, Dave Liebman, Don Menza, Chris Potter, Al Porcino, Dieter Reith, Claudio Roditi, Ernie Watts, Kenny Wheeler, Jiggs Whigham, Norma Winstone, and Joe Zawinul, and works as a freelance contributor in the big bands of WDR, HR, NDR, SDR, Rias Berlin, and the SWF Radio Orchestra.
