product description
Daniel Schnyder: Alone Together, Oedipus (World Premiere Recording!), Henri Tomasi, Daniel Hess. From the Gentle Light of the Sun (World Premiere Recording!)
Successful fusion of two musical styles
The Kontraste Zürich Ensemble is a formation consisting of musicians from the Zurich Opera, established in 1997. The members hail from Switzerland, Austria, Germany, South Africa, Bulgaria, and the USA. They are all members of the Zurich Opera Orchestra and the Tonhalle Orchestra, performing in various configurations from duos to septets. The ensemble aims to present high-quality and exceptional chamber music works that are rarely performed due to their instrumentation. It also seeks to explore the music of young, talented Swiss composers and commission new compositions whenever possible.
The compositions of Zurich-born Daniel Schnyder are performed by renowned orchestras worldwide. Both "Three Pieces" and "Alone Together" utilize instruments typical of a classical orchestra. However, the rhythmic elements hint at Schnyder's jazz influences. This successful fusion of two musical styles is a hallmark of Schnyder's music.
In "Alone Together," sophisticated rhythmic shifts emerge from identical metric structures, clearly inspired by jazz. Whether in melody, harmony, or meter, the interplay between individual solo instruments and the ensemble as a whole aligns with the fundamental idea of this piece.
