In spring 2017, Wolfgang Diefenbach, director of the Hessian State Youth Jazz Orchestra Kicks & Sticks, invites the globally renowned a cappella group The Real Group to collaborate on a joint project. What began as a concert evolved into a friendship.
Founded in 1985 by Wolfgang Diefenbach, Kicks & Sticks aims to provide highly talented young musicians with professional big band training at the highest level. More than 2,000 young musicians have participated in concerts alongside stars such as Dianne Reeves, Dee Dee Bridgewater, James Morrison, and the New York Voices on stages worldwide.
CD productions have repeatedly marked highlights of the band's work, and with distinction: The very first CD, "Kicks & Sticks," was awarded the German Record Critics' Prize.
The Real Group from Sweden is one of the world's most successful a cappella groups. With voices as instruments, the quintet creates a unique sound blending jazz, pop, and Northern European vocal music, significantly influencing the a cappella scene. Their diverse repertoire and excellence have led to collaborations with symphony orchestras, jazz bands, and renowned musicians such as Barbara Hendricks, Toots Thielemans, and Sir George Martin.
For the joint production of The Real Group with Kicks & Sticks, renowned arrangers such as Darmon Meader, Jan Wessels, Mike Mossman, and Jeremy Fox were enlisted to give immortal hits like "Can't Buy Me Love," "Bad," or "Ordinary People" a fitting orchestral arrangement.
The result is a unique production: full of big band sound and a phenomenal vocal ensemble.
