Sometimes everything happens very quickly. You meet, you understand each other, you visit each other, you make a record together. Worlds merge because jazz pianist Aruán Ortiz brings Cuban rhythms and a profound classical training, while Norwegian Grete Skarpeid brings her love for jazz, singer-songwriters, and folk songs.
At first glance, these worlds seem far apart because Scandinavian and Afro-Cuban music traditions have no common ground. However, Ortiz and Skarpeid are not deterred by this. On the contrary, they not only build a bridge but also bring together the unfamiliar. (...)
Because the ten songs draw from many sources, each contains something familiar (…) Exciting contrasts emerge between the bright, clear melodies of the singer and the voluminous, rhythmically nuanced sounds of the band. Through the openness with which Ortiz's band and the singer interact, this encounter transcending continents and cultural circles gives rise to something new, unusual, and harmonious." - Werner Stiefele
