product description
Tom Bourgeois – saxophone, bass clarinet; Thibault Dille – accordion; Florent Jeunieaux – guitar; Loïs Le Van – vocals
"MURMURES," like the warm breath of a familiar person, softly whispers into your ear. "MURMURES," like the sound of a familiar word, sharing a secret shyly. The combination of saxophone, guitar, accordion, and vocals creates a poetic, idyllic atmosphere. Together or individually, they flow smoothly, resembling the movements of the human soul. As they improvise and journey towards finding themselves, they eventually converge in perfect harmony.
Melancholic and warm simultaneously; the music - composed by Tom Bourgeois – progresses through various stages, much like how a person transitions through different passages in life. In 2016, he joined forces with singer Lois Le Van, accordionist Thibault Dille, and guitarist Florent Jeunieaux, whose distinct musical styles accentuate his compositions. The sonic landscape created by this unconventional acoustic lineup is transformed into true simplicity.
Listening almost naturally guides you through a story that feels familiar to our ears. Tender, yet assertive.
"MURMURES" is an authentic work of composition and arrangement. Each track highlights the instrumental lineup, whether as a duo, trio, or quartet, to explore the fullest range of sounds.
The program consists of two parts: The first includes 10 original compositions by Tom Bourgeois, focusing on both harmonies and French and English lyrics interpreted by singer Lois Le Van.
The second part is an arrangement of Maurice Ravel's Quartet for Strings in F Major. Completely reimagined, Tom Bourgeois rewrote the piece for his ensemble, breathing new life into it. The first movement leaves room for the accordion, the second for the soprano saxophone. The third movement is enriched by French lyrics written by Francois Vaiana and sung by Lois Le Van. Finally, the fourth movement features the guitar. The four strings of Maurice Ravel's quartet become a collection of voices from the four different instruments.
With this program, Tom Bourgeois has rediscovered and recontextualized a piece written centuries ago in his own unique way. This evolution is driven by a clear and precise thought: to transform the old into something new.
As a highly active musician in both Belgium's jazz scene and internationally, Tom Bourgeois has realized an album as a bandleader and composer for the first time. "MURMURES" is the result of his hard work in writing for the acoustic quartet he formed in 2016.
