Chamber Jazz & World Music
Kalima captivates on EVERYTHING WITHIN with modern chamber jazz & world music. The trio led by vocalist Sascha Ley surprises with the boldness with which it approaches an uninhibited and original jazz, moving imaginatively around melodic lines and rhythmically dynamic moments. This unique trio was rightfully awarded the Audience Prize at the Tremplin JAZZ d’Avignon 2009. Kalima's music, lyrics, and onomatopoeias lead listeners through harmonic landscapes and moods that demonstrate an excitingly unusual character.

Artist Portrait on RTL about Sascha Ley
Press:
"(...) three equally strong pillars, carrying a blend of velvety vocal acrobatics, powerful piano sounds, and crystal-clear saxophone tones for almost an hour. (...) An album that is worth discovering live."
Letzeburger Journal 10/13
"Subtle, finely woven, tension-filled yet relaxed and serene (...) attentive ears will make discoveries upon each re-listen, which is always worth it."
Melodiva 07/13 (Marion Möhle)
"Simply very beautiful because it was born out of fantasy and marries with a variety of sounds, always in search of rare pearls. This CD is a special sonic spectacle, blending brilliant chamber jazz with vocal jazz and world music."
Lëtzebuerger Vollek 06/13 (Michel Schroeder)
"Kalima is an unconventional trio that creates lush music. (...) live and play without barriers. Anyone who loves new jazz, isn't afraid of adventurous music, and likes to be surprised is in good hands with this trio."
jazzflits 06/13 (Hessel Fluitman)
"With her sometimes acrobatic vocal skills, vocalist Sascha Ley is at the center of the trio Kalima, and also pianist Laia Genc and Anne Kaftan (bass clarinet and soprano saxophone), at times, devote themselves to more or less unconventional sounds of their instruments. However, for the most part, Kalima's songs are very melodic, with a piano that delicately underlines the songs here and there."
LIRA 06/13 (Rasmus Klockljung)
"In the tightly woven net of rhythm, bass figures, eccentric harmony, and interesting melodies, the powerful and intonation-secure voice of the bandleader appears to me more like an additional instrument, less like a singer in the conventional sense."
SONIC 03/13 (Uwe Ladwig)
"Sascha Ley contains a whole universe of voices. Galaxies full of music. (...) Altogether, an incredible trio. Perhaps THE surprise par excellence."
Jazz Podium 05/13 (Jörg Konrad)
"Sascha Ley, Laia Genc, and Anne Kaftan dare the hybridization of East and West, Bangalore and New York, 'World' and jazz, and the result of this confrontation is not only wonderfully audible but also marked by remarkable artistic intelligence (...)."
Luxemburger Wort 05/13 Gaston Carré
"A very colorful and joyful work, even in the musical sense."
Melodiva 04/13
Interview on Cazkolik.com
"(...) an extremely diverse and varied spectrum of sounds (...), a repertoire that ranges from mystical ballads to clever jazz improvisations to lively exotic rhythms. (...) Kalima's music is just fun. It's a pure joy to immerse oneself in this sound."
D'Lëtzebuerger Land, 02/13 (Marc Fiedler)
"(...) a very extraordinary sound spectacle, characterized by a special sonic homogeneity and variation, a peak of contemporary music!"
Jazzzeitung 02/13 (Hans-Jürgen von Osterhausen)
"The music of the feminine trio is dominated by an avant-garde gesture, where Ley's inquisitive voice rubs against Kaftan's dark, buzzing bass clarinet - influences from contemporary music and modern, chamber musical jazz become apparent."
Jazz thing 04/13 (Rolf Thomas)
"Fabulous music."
Radio ARA 03/13 (Ron Tuffel)
"'Nomadic' music. Honest and surprising, daring and versatile, captivating and adventurous (...) Kalima's second album Everything Within is all of that at once."
Le Quotidien 03/13 (Pablo Chimienti)
"Vocal jazz fans with a penchant for world music should go insane over this release. (...) New sounds, new approaches, and a new way of looking at vocal jazz. Incredibly creative."
Criticaljazz.com 02/13 (Brent Black)
"'Everything Within' is a musical journey, it's rather quieter tones that create an almost intimate closeness, taking you here and there. (...) it's always very serious, and
the compositions seem very sophisticated."
Telecran 02/13 (Martina Folscheid)
"(Kalima) present a wonderful blend of modern chamber jazz and world music. Wonderful rhythms and melodies emerge in these very intricate compositions. (...) A great, very exciting album (...)."
BRF 02/13 (Hans Reul)
