product description
Helmut Eisel & JEM: Helmut Eisel - Clarinet, Michael Marx - Guitar; Stefan Engelmann - Bass
Unique!
There's no comparable group that combines innovation, tradition, and skill as enchantingly as Helmut Eisel & JEM. Eisel's clarinet playing is hard to describe: stylistically somewhere between Benny Goodman and Giora Feidman, he seasons his playing with a hefty dose of experimentation: he doesn't just play the clarinet, he tells stories, laughs, shouts, revels, mourns, and rages with the clarinet: how closely he comes to the human voice is evident especially in fascinating dialogues with the voice of Michael Marx.
Guitarist Michael Marx and double bassist Stefan Engelmann create pulsating soundscapes, robust grooves, and also showcase themselves as excellent soloists.
Clarinet Colours is the result of 20 years of playing together and countless concerts. Since 1989, clarinetist Helmut Eisel and guitarist Michael Marx have been on stage with the project "JEM." The third member was bassist Herbert Jagst; since his death in 2000, Stefan Engelmann has been on double bass. The trio's most important approach is music that is more melody-oriented than jazz and allows ample room for improvisation but also for emotions. Also significant is a wide dynamic range, from practically inaudible to a volume that you would never expect from three unamplified instruments. Whether it should be classified as klezmer music, jazz, or rather classical is incidental to both the musicians and their fans. It is above all the honesty, the direct address to the audience, with which this trio excels.

Press:
"Helmut Eisel doesn't just let the clarinet speak, but also cry, laugh, scold, and console. Anyone who has heard him in concert will not forget this experience quickly."
rohrblatt 09/10
"The Saarbrücken musician and composer has long since found his own style, making the clarinet laugh and cry, scold and comfort."
treff.regio, Saarbrücker Zeitung 03/10
"Breathless, Eisels improvisational lust stripped away all restraints here, and not infrequently, something of the old, rugged New Orleans spirit shone through even in his completely individual interpretations."
Rheinpfalz 03/10
"[...] what the clarinetist Helmut Eisel elicits from his instrument is definitely more than worth hearing. [...] There's only one thing to say about 'Clarinet Colours': definitely listen in."
tachles 01/10
"With the quality of his playing, Eisel transcends traditional klezmer sound and ventures into never-before-heard fascinating sonic worlds."
Nienburger Zeitung 12/09
"It's the almost countless possible (and impossible) timbres that make a clarinet so exciting, so gripping. Sometimes hard, sometimes gentle, sometimes warm, sometimes cold, sometimes joyfully excited, sometimes melancholic. [...] Direct, immediate, honest. Only the concert is more personal."
CLARINO PRINT 12/08
"Helmut Eisel's strong musical personality is manifested in the way he shares music. The combination of an exceptional classical musician together with a real Klezmer brings the very special essence of this recording."
Giora Feidman, 1/08
