The tango ventures into musical extremes: from extremely accented, even aggressive and dissonant, to extremely melancholic and expressive. It offers special musical freedoms: the melodies must be rhythmically altered and expanded with one's own ideas and phrasings.
In 2006, violinist Christiane Holzenbecher and pianist Sarah Umiger founded the ensemble Tango Sí! with Karin Eckstein on bandoneon and Israel Vázquez on guitar. In contrast to many other groups that only understand Piazzolla under Tango, the ensemble delves deeply into traditional Tango stylistics.
Their debut album ¡PRÉPARENSE! is an unconventional blend of their own arrangements, traditional tangos, as well as Tango Nuevo, taking listeners on a diverse journey into the world of Argentine tango. Thus, the musicians showcase the broad spectrum of tango: from classical Argentine tangos in original arrangements (Prepárense, A Don Agustín Bardi, Payadora, Un Placer) to classical Argentine tangos in their own new arrangements, characterized by extended harmonies, polyphonic, even dissonant approaches, and the treatment of the double bass as a melodic instrument (Nocturna, Romance de Barrio), to new paths of tango and lesser-known pieces by Piazzolla (Revirado, Concierto para Quinteto, Aire de la Zamba Niña).
