Joachim Caffonnette Trio
Pianist and composer Joachim Caffonnette from Brussels presents his second album as a leader, titled "VERS L’AZUR NOIR." Inspired by a poem by Rimbaud and the tragedy of migrants hoping to cross the Mediterranean, this album marks a return to one of the most classic yet flexible formations in the history of jazz: the piano trio.
Featuring 9 tracks, including 6 original compositions by Joachim Caffonnette, two rock standards, and a cover of Thelonious Monk, the album was recorded in two sessions: the first six tracks in November 2017 at Jet Studio and the last three tracks live in Brussels in September 2018. This approach reflects the desire to combine the precision of studio recording with the spontaneity of a jazz concert.
After his first album with a quintet, Joachim connected musically with French musicians Alex Gilson (bass) and Jean-Baptiste Pinet (drums). The trio toured for a year and a half before recording "VERS L’AZUR NOIR." The album takes the listener on a journey between the harmonic richness characterizing the composer's work and the search for the essential in the simplicity of the chosen melodies. The music oscillates between written sections (A Mawda, Perspectives, Inner Necessity) and moments of great freedom (Tripoli’s Sorrow, Monk’s Dream).
