Friedemann Johannes Wieland - Organ

In the series "New Organ Edition Ulm Cathedral," Cathedral organist Friedemann Johannes Wieland presents his third recording.

The selection of the program recorded consists exclusively of listener requests made during the traditional organ concert in Advent in recent years.
An emphasis in compiling the program was also on the organist's desire to showcase the diversity of the main organ in Ulm Cathedral: delicate works of the Baroque and Classical periods alternate with rich sounds of German and French organ romanticism.

Thus, the CD title "PER TUTTI" ("For Everyone") reflects the concept and content of this CD without attempting to be pandering: rich full sounds, delicate tones, and a selection of works that every organ enthusiast will appreciate.
Additionally, this CD contains two German premiere recordings: Henri-Victor Turnaillon's "Introduction et Marche" and Leopold Mozart / Johann Ernst Eberlin's "Der Morgen und der Abend" ("The Morning and the Evening").

The CD program begins with Johann Sebastian Bach's "Passacaglia in C": In 21 variations, the ostinato theme is developed, which is continued in the subsequent fugue with 12 theme entries.

Then follows Domenico Zipoli's "Toccata in D" and "Pastorale in C." The Toccata presents a virtuosic display of a variety of sounds, while the Pastorale swings calmly over an organ point. A brief, cheerful middle section leads to a chromatically enriched variation of the opening theme.

Next are two works of French organ romanticism. Henri-Victor Turnaillon's "Introduction et Marche" unfolds magnificent sounds of reed stops, while Louis James Alfred Lefébure-Wély's "Boléro de concert" presents the cheerful and humorous side of this period.

Following this is the cycle "Der Abend und der Morgen" ("The Evening and the Morning"), 12 musical pieces for the horn stop ("Salzburger Stier") of the Hohensalzburg Fortress. The horn stop is a roller organ consisting of 200 pipes that sound three times a day. L. Mozart and Eberlin composed a suitable movement for each month, with March additionally extended by a cycle of variations.
The first two movements from Organ Sonata No. 11, op. 148 by Joseph Gabriel Rheinberger then represent German organ romanticism. While the first movement is dominated by chromatic progression and modulations, the "Cantilene" flows calmly and atmospherically with its beautiful theme.

The CD program concludes with Théodore Dubois's "Toccata in G," whose splendor and virtuosity are the main reasons for its popularity.

The main organ of Ulm Cathedral presents itself delicately, differentiated, and sometimes chamber-like in the typical acoustics of the cathedral. The registrations of the compositions feature some surprising and unique sound combinations, which also highlight the uniqueness of this instrument.

Not only musically, but also in terms of recording, every effort was made for this recording - with the overarching goal of fully showcasing the ever-present polyphony of the music and the extremely dynamic sound spectrum of the instrument in this overpowering space.
