Rea Som

The Swiss band dedicated to Brazilian music is called REA SOM, led by the singer and composer Rea Hunziker. Rea Hunziker was born in Baden, Switzerland, in 1989, and grew up in an artist and musician family.

In the summer of 2007, Rea traveled to Brazil for the first time and returned with impactful memories of the country, its music, and culture. Fascinated by Brazilian music, she founded the band REA SOM. Rea started to emulate the voices of Brazilian female singers Maria Rita and Elis Regina, learned Portuguese, and soon began writing her own lyrics. Since 2011, REA SOM has been performing concerts throughout Switzerland, including at the Festival da Jazz St. Moritz, Blue Balls Festival Luzern, Stimmen Festival Ettiswil, Gambrinus Jazz Plus St. Gallen, Jazz in Baden, Sternenkeller Rüti, and Jazz in Sarnen.

In 2018, after another stay in Rio de Janeiro, the second REA SOM album, "Arte Calma" (Quiet Art), was released on Unit Records. The album features compositions by the singer, recorded with guitarist Martin Schenker, bassist Jonas Künzli, drummer Samuel Messerli, and percussionist Alejandro Panetta in October 2017 at Hardstudios in Winterthur, Switzerland. The CD is a co-production with Radio SRF 2 Kultur. To celebrate the band's 10th anniversary in 2022, the third CD, "Boa Viagem" (Good Journey), will be released.

The album was recorded during the COVID-19 lockdown at Visco Sound Studio in Emmen, Switzerland, and mixed and mastered at Bauer Studios in Ludwigsburg, Germany. The multicultural band frequently collaborates with prominent figures in the Brazilian jazz scene, such as saxophonist Rodrigo Botter Maio, percussionist Alejandro Panetta, drummer Juan Carlos Abreu, pianist Simon Althaus, and percussionist Freddy Benitez.
