Nima Farahmand Bafi

Nima Farahmand Bafi was born in 1984 in Tehran into a family of musicians. His father, a renowned Tonbak player, introduced him to the world of music through this traditional Persian percussion instrument. Nima's deep passion for piano music was sparked by a recording of Mozart's Sonata in C Minor, leading him to start playing the piano at the age of 12 and make the decision to become a pianist.
After completing his Bachelor's degree in Physics in 2009 at Sharif University of Technology in Tehran, he continued his Master's studies in Germany. Starting in 2010, he joined the class of Peter Nagy at the University of Music and Performing Arts Stuttgart, simultaneously studying both music and physics. Following his Master's degree in Physics, he continued his research for his Ph.D. at the University of Stuttgart and the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems. He concluded his Master's program with Prof. Nagy in the summer of 2016. When asked how he reconciles these seemingly disparate interests, Nima Farahmand Bafi responds, "Music and physics are not 'studies' or 'work' for me; they are two great loves. I am like a battery; it only works when both poles are functioning. I can only be myself when I have both music and physics."
