Virtuoso Strikes
Sun-Min Shim is an outstanding percussion soloist from Korea. For her, playing percussion instruments means much more than mastering the technique of striking in precise rhythm. It is rather the art of connecting inwardly with each individual instrument and bringing it to life with wonderful sensitivity. With a combination of high virtuosity, sensitive playing nature, and the ability to make the finest dynamic and tonal differentiations, Sun-Min creates music with soul that captivates the listener. The literature selected for her debut album, featuring solo marimba, solo percussion, and marimba plus percussion, is heard on CD for the first time in this compilation!
Born in Seoul, Sun-Min Shim began piano lessons at the age of 6 before discovering percussion in 1992. In 1996, she began her studies in percussion at the Korea National University of Arts. Even before and during her studies in her homeland, she garnered attention as a winner of significant competitions. She notably won first prize at the 3rd Korea National Percussion Competition and the Korean Broadcasting Competition. Her greatest successes abroad came in September 2001 when she won first prize and the Grand Prix at the 5th Krysztof Penderecki International Competition of Contemporary Chamber Music in Krakow, Poland. To further her musical education, Sun-Min Shim pursued studies abroad at the State University of Music and Performing Arts Stuttgart in 2001 under the tutelage of Prof. Klaus Tresselt. She completed her studies in orchestral music and instrumental teaching, each with a diploma. In May 2007, she graduated from the soloist class with distinction.
Press Acclaim:
"Tonal to freely tonal, not too avant-garde, very beautifully played, the pieces fit together nicely." - off beat 05/09
