What was once considered impossible in past generations has now become reality: a youth orchestra - the LJO Baden-Württemberg - is performing Gustav Mahler's 5th Symphony. Life and death, love and unrequited longing, happiness and sorrow, inner turmoil and passionate intensity, conflict and overwhelming euphoria, intimate emotions and stark contrasts - all these elements, embodying the imagination, life experiences, and grand visions of a unique and brilliant personality like Gustav Mahler, are brought to life through music. The intriguing question was how a youth orchestra would tackle the complex demands of instrumental mastery and musical interpretation. Upon listening, one quickly realizes the depth of commitment the young musicians bring to this monumental work, even though they may not yet have experienced its full weight. Their interpretation resonates with vibrant vitality and youthful fervor, particularly evident in the energetic bursts of the second movement. Their approach is refreshingly devoid of pretense or artifice; instead, the music blossoms with heartfelt sincerity and genuine depth, especially in the soulful depths of the fourth movement. The sheer joy of virtuosic agility is palpable as the LJO Baden-Württemberg navigates Mahler's score with both alertness and a willingness to explore uncharted territories. 

Founded in 1972 by Christoph Wyneken, the Landesjugendorchester Baden-Württemberg has provided a platform for selected young musicians, aged 15 to 22, from across the region to come together and engage in collaborative music-making. Through their infectious enthusiasm and stylistically nuanced interpretations, the LJO quickly established itself as a prominent fixture in the concert scene of Baden-Württemberg.

Under Wyneken's leadership, the orchestra has garnered acclaim for its performances, with concerts regularly recorded by SWR and numerous CDs documenting their diverse programs. Wyneken himself has received accolades for his dedication to musical education, including the Bundesverdienstkreuz and the Bruno-Frey-Preis der Landesakademie Ochsenhausen.

As one of the few conductors adept at leading both professional and youth orchestras, Wyneken's extensive experience has encompassed engagements with renowned ensembles across the globe.
