The Katharina Maschmeyer Quartet presents itself as a well-rehearsed unit on this vinyl. In addition to elaborate modern jazz arrangements, the band is also characterized by the freedom the musicians have to interact with each other. As a result, the compositions, which are almost exclusively by Katharina Maschmeyer and Nils Pollheide, come across as intuitive and flowing and not at all cerebral. Fast unison parts, tricky odd rhythms and sophisticated bass lines alternate with free parts. Ballads and quieter passages are not neglected either, so that a lot of variety is offered within the agile quartet sound with a high recognition value. An outstanding production that no jazz lover should be without!
