product description
Isabell Schmitt - Soprano; Lidia Vinyes Curtis - Alto; Stephan Scherpe - Tenor; Ekkehard Abele - Bass
Stuttgart Cantorei; Stuttgart Stiftsphilharmonie; Kay Johannsen - Conductor
"Credo in Deum," based on the Apostles' Creed (set to music in Latin) and texts by Martin Luther (set to music in English and German), is the largest composition to date by Stuttgart's Stiftskantor Kay Johannsen – a symphonic meditation for voices and instruments on faith. In this richly orchestrated work lasting over an hour, the choir, the four vocal soloists, and the intricately employed orchestra engage in a complex dialogue on the tension-filled relationship between humanity and God, encompassing doubts, questions, and complaints as well as trust, adoration, and praise.
Commissioned by the Protestant Regional Church in Württemberg for the Reformation anniversary, the work premiered on October 27, 2017, and was performed again on Good Friday, March 30, 2018, to much acclaim – now complemented by three instrumental interludes. This concert, conducted by the composer himself, featured the Stuttgart Cantorei, the Stuttgart Stiftsphilharmonie, and four excellent vocal soloists, resulting in a CD recording for the Animato label.
